Automotive Refrigerant Weight Converter

Automotive refrigerant conversion tool

Automotive Refrigerant Weight Converter

Convert the refrigerant charge printed on a vehicle A/C label between kilograms, pounds and ounces. The calculator also shows the mathematical equivalent in 12-ounce cans for reference.

Convert the Label Amount

Enter the numeric amount exactly as it appears on the vehicle A/C information label, then select the label’s unit.

Enter numbers only. Do not include the unit inside the amount field.

Important: This calculator converts weight units. It does not identify the correct refrigerant, diagnose the A/C system or determine whether refrigerant should be added.

Quick Answer

  • Find the vehicle A/C label under the hood or near the radiator support.
  • Enter the printed refrigerant amount and select its original unit.
  • The calculator converts the same weight into kilograms, pounds, ounces and 12-ounce equivalents.
  • A conversion result does not determine whether the system needs refrigerant.
  • Automotive A/C systems should be serviced using the manufacturer-specified refrigerant type and exact weight.

Refrigerant Weight Conversion Formulas

The calculator uses standard mass conversions. The refrigerant type does not change the mathematical relationship between kilograms, pounds and ounces.

Kilograms and pounds

1 kg = 2.20462 lb
Pounds = kilograms × 2.20462
Kilograms = pounds ÷ 2.20462

Pounds and ounces

1 lb = 16 oz
Ounces = pounds × 16
Pounds = ounces ÷ 16

Kilograms and ounces

1 kg = 35.27396 oz
Ounces = kilograms × 35.27396

12-ounce equivalence

Can equivalent = total ounces ÷ 12

This is a mathematical comparison only. A fractional result must not be rounded into a refrigerant-charging instruction.

Use the vehicle specification

Where Is the Automotive A/C Refrigerant Label?

Common label locations

  • Underside of the hood
  • Radiator or core support
  • Near the hood latch
  • Strut-tower area
  • Another manufacturer-designated underhood location

Label location varies by vehicle. Do not assume that a label from a similar model applies to your vehicle.

Information to verify

  • Refrigerant type, such as R-134a or R-1234yf
  • Factory-specified charge weight
  • The unit used: kg, g, lb or oz
  • Front-only or front-and-rear A/C configuration
  • Compressor-oil information, when shown

Do not identify refrigerant by connector appearance alone. Verify the vehicle label and applicable manufacturer information before connecting service equipment.

What the 12-Ounce Can Result Means

Many searches ask how many 12-ounce cans equal a refrigerant charge. The converter answers that mathematical question, but the result is not a recommendation to charge a vehicle from cans.

If the calculator returns 1.35 cans, that means the entered weight equals 16.2 ounces. It does not mean that the vehicle should receive one can, two cans or any additional refrigerant.

  • The existing refrigerant amount inside the system is unknown until it is properly recovered and measured.
  • Low refrigerant may indicate leakage that should be investigated.
  • Pressures change with temperature, airflow, load and system operation.
  • The manufacturer-specified weight applies to an appropriately serviced system—not automatically to a partially charged system.
  • Never mix R-134a and R-1234yf.

Refrigerant Weight Conversion Examples

These are mathematical examples—not refrigerant specifications for any particular vehicle. Always use the label or applicable manufacturer information for the vehicle being serviced.

Values are rounded for display. The calculator retains greater precision during calculation.
Example label amount Pounds Ounces 12-oz equivalent
0.45 kg 0.99 lb 15.87 oz 1.32
0.50 kg 1.10 lb 17.64 oz 1.47
0.60 kg 1.32 lb 21.16 oz 1.76
0.75 kg 1.65 lb 26.46 oz 2.21
1.00 kg 2.20 lb 35.27 oz 2.94

Conversion is only one step

Why the Correct Refrigerant Weight Matters

Too much refrigerant

An overcharged system may operate at abnormal pressures, cool poorly and place additional load on the compressor. Its symptoms may also resemble airflow or condenser problems.

Too little refrigerant

An undercharged system may provide insufficient cooling and operate outside its intended conditions. The cause of the refrigerant loss should be investigated instead of repeatedly adding refrigerant.

Pressure is not charge weight

Pressure readings are diagnostic measurements affected by ambient temperature, airflow, heat load and component operation. They do not replace an exact refrigerant charge by weight.

Proper service may require refrigerant recovery, leak inspection, evacuation, charging by the manufacturer-specified weight and final performance verification.

Refrigerant Conversion Calculator FAQs

How many ounces are in one pound of refrigerant?

One pound equals 16 ounces. This is a weight conversion and applies regardless of whether the automotive refrigerant is R-134a or R-1234yf.

How many pounds are in one kilogram?

One kilogram equals approximately 2.20462 pounds. For automotive A/C work, retain sufficient precision and follow the vehicle’s specified charge unit and weight.

How do I convert kilograms of refrigerant to ounces?

Multiply the kilogram amount by 35.27396. For example, 0.50 kg equals approximately 17.64 ounces.

How is the 12-ounce can equivalent calculated?

Divide the total refrigerant weight in ounces by 12. The resulting number is a mathematical equivalent and should not be rounded into a vehicle-charging instruction.

Does the can equivalent tell me how much refrigerant to add?

No. It does not account for refrigerant already inside the system, leakage, air or moisture contamination, system condition or the cause of the A/C problem.

Where can I find the factory refrigerant amount?

The amount is commonly printed on an underhood A/C information label. It may be located under the hood, on the radiator or core support, near the hood latch or in another manufacturer-designated location.

Can two vehicles of the same model use different charge amounts?

Yes. Charge amount can vary by model year, engine, body style, refrigerant type and front-only or front-and-rear A/C configuration. Verify the specification for the exact vehicle.

Should a vehicle A/C system be charged by pressure or weight?

The final refrigerant charge should follow the manufacturer-specified weight. Pressure readings are used during diagnosis and performance testing but do not replace the specified charge weight.

Need professional A/C service?

Request Mobile Automotive A/C Service

If your vehicle is not cooling correctly, submit the vehicle information, A/C complaint and exact Miami-Dade service address. We will review the request and contact you about eligibility, availability and the next step.

The initial inspection costs $100 and includes up to one hour of diagnostic testing. Mobile service requires a safe private driveway, private parking area or approved fleet property.

Submitting a request does not guarantee an appointment, provide a diagnosis or establish a final repair price.
