Why do I have to flush my auto A/C System?

Auto A/C contamination is one of the top reasons repairs fail repeatedly. Sealants, moisture, mixed or incorrect oils, excess dye, air, metal or Teflon debris, and off-spec refrigerants can restrict the TXV/orifice tube, reduce cooling, and accelerate compressor wear. This guide explains the most common contaminant types, the warning signs drivers notice, prevention tips, and when a professional flush and component replacement plan is recommended.

The Hidden Enemies: Understanding Contaminants in Your Auto A/C System

Metal and Teflon: Metal debris results from compressor failure, while Teflon originates from A/C compressor piston seals. Sealant: Refrigerant sealers may temporarily stop leaks but can gel and clog vital components like the TXV, evaporator, and orifice tubes. No vehicle manufacturer approves sealant use in A/C systems. Moisture: Can enter the system from contaminated PAG oil, refrigerant, or exposure to the atmosphere. Compressor Lubricant: Using the wrong lubricant or mixing incompatible oils can cause system contamination. Leak Detection Dye: Excessive dye use can alter A/C compressor oil viscosity and create performance issues. Air: Air leaks, improper vacuuming during recharge, or contaminated recycled refrigerant can introduce unwanted air into the system. Refrigerant: Unapproved refrigerant blends may damage components. Lubricant Additives: Unless OEM-approved, additives may negatively impact system performance.
By understanding these contaminants, you can better maintain your auto A/C system and extend its lifespan. Stay cool and drive safely! 😊
