Understanding How a Car A/C Accumulator Works

The A/C accumulator is a crucial component located at the outlet of the evaporator inside your car’s engine compartment. It looks like a metallic can or tank with hoses connected to it. Unlike a receiver/drier, accumulators are larger and don’t have a sight glass. They help control moisture within the air conditioning system, making it essential to replace the accumulator after any system repairs. A leaking or open system exposes the desiccant bag inside the accumulator to outside air, rendering it ineffective. If you’re located in Hialeah, Doral, Miami Lakes, or anywhere in Miami-Dade County, read on to learn more and see how we can help.

Function of an A/C Accumulator

In some automotive A/C systems, the accumulator temporarily stores liquid refrigerant to prevent it from reaching the compressor—avoiding potential damage. It also traps moisture and contaminants to keep your air conditioning system running smoothly.

Causes of Accumulator Failure

The accumulator contains a filter screen, pick-up tube, liquid bleed hole, and a desiccant. If the desiccant bag breaks, debris can flow through the system. Over time, constant filtration and moisture absorption can lead to internal blockages or restrictions that reduce A/C performance.
